Art and Craft Workshops with Crafts Afloat
Crafts Afloat offers a variety of exciting and contemporary craft experiences to suit everyone’s tastes. All delivered aboard a beautiful, purpose built narrowboat art studio!
Workshops for Individuals and Private Bookings
The workshops I offer to individuals and private groups, are designed for art and craft lovers, beginners or experienced crafters, and for those who simply want to enjoy a creative day out. The workshops have proved popular with mothers and daughters and family and friends who wish to spend some quality time together. The narrowboat studio is a wonderful space, specifically designed to help you unwind, relax and get creative. The boat seats a maximum of 5-6 people depending on the workshop or party.
I am currently running full day workshops in Felted Textiles, Mosaics, Beginners Glass Fusing and Printing. Printing workshops are only available as a full boat booking. I run one workshop per month in Felting, Mosaics and Fused Glass, with other dates available for private full boat bookings. See EVENTS CALENDAR.
Crafts Afloat Social Enterprise Workshops
Crafts Afloat is currently launching a series of partially funded creative projects to community organisations and charities. Huge thanks to the School for Social Entrepreneurs Programme and Lloyd’s Bank who will be supporting these events. We are excited to be offering workshops aimed at improving emotional well-being through creative activities and time spent on the canal! If you are part of an organisation who would like to find out more information about these opportunities, please CONTACT Melanie Louise.
How it works?
An EVENTS CALENDAR shows dates for scheduled full day workshops in Felting, Mosaics and Beginners Fused Glass. These workshops are available for individuals to book onto and join a class. Dates are also listed for Full Boat Bookings for parties or private workshops. You will require a group of 4-6 people and can choose to book a party or a workshop of your choice. Dates on the calendar are flexible so if you have a specific date in mind please enquire. Wednesdays and Fridays are often available for full boat bookings.
Full Day Workshops usually start at 10.30am and finish at approximately 4.30pm. Workshops include morning pastries with cups of tea and fresh coffee. Lunch is served at the Olive Branch restaurant or the Stubbing Wharf canal side pub. The Olive Branch serves a delicious selection of Turkish salads, wraps or ciabattas and the Stubbing Wharf serves a hearty bowl of vegetarian soup with a choice of yummy sandwiches served on white or brown bloomer. Lunch also includes a soft drink or a glass of wine, to help get the creative juices flowing! Tea and coffee are served throughout the day with sweet treats and cake in the afternoon. After a day of Creative Escapism with Crafts Afloat you will feel relaxed, inspired and a little bit spoilt!
Full day workshops are £70 per person. Crafts Afloat offers a tiered pricing system, aimed at creating an inclusive service. See PRICES for more information.

Generally workshops require four people to run. Crafts Afloat reserves the right to change workshops dates if they are not fully booked.
In this workshop you will have the opportunity to experiment with a range of textiles skills including wet felting, needle felting, hand stitched embroidery, free motion machine stitching and machine embroidery. You will be given the option to create a piece of felted artwork, a purse or an A5 book cover.
Firstly you will choose from a selection of beautiful, brightly dyed Merino wool, Alpaca or wool from British sheep, that are naturally coloured and just as lovely. All wool fibres are purchased from the wonderful Wingham Wool Works.
A flat piece of felt will be made using the simple wet felting process of manipulating and matting fibres together using soapy water and a bit of elbow grease!
In the afternoon, extra detail will be added to the felt using needle felting and machine embroidery. Most workshop participants opt to create a beautiful piece of felted art, some prefer to turn their felt into a more functional item. The choice is yours!
The boat is equipped with a selection of best quality Merino wool, yarns, threads, buttons and beads. Four fantastic sewing machines, run from solar power are available for your use.
Nuno Scarf Felting Workshops are available for private bookings of two or four people. Contact Melanie for more details.
Workshop Cost – £70 (tiered pricing available)

If you are a bit of a magpie like me, you will love this workshop!
You will have the option to make a mosaic mirror or a piece of mosaic art. Your mosaic piece of work will be decorated with a selection of glass tiles, coloured glass, broken crockery and mirror. The boat is stocked with an exciting array of colourful, shimmery, patterned and iridescent treasures to add texture, pattern, detail and sparkle to your work.
This workshop is ideal for those who fancy a relaxing and peaceful day of creativity. It is a brilliant workshop for all levels and excellent for those who feel they aren’t that arty! You will be taught how to snip tiles, score glass and apply the pieces. These skills can be taken away with you and used to carry on creating if you so desire! The techniques used are easy to pick up and advice and exciting imagery is provided to inspire designs and colour choices.
